Ancient Reputation. Modern Scrutiny.
Saffron's story didn't start on TikTok.
Humans have valued saffron for centuries across Persian, Egyptian, Mediterranean, and other traditional systems.
Historical accounts even connect saffron with Cleopatra-era beauty and wellness rituals.
But the interesting part isn't the ancient story.
It's what happened next.
Modern researchers began putting standardized saffron extracts into randomized human trials.
Mood.
Stress.
Sleep.
Psychological symptoms in perimenopausal women.
And in a 2024 meta-analysis, researchers pooled eight randomized trials comparing saffron interventions with SSRIs for depressive symptoms.
The pooled analysis found no statistically significant difference between groups in depressive-symptom improvement.
That doesn't make saffron a prescription antidepressant.
It does make one thing very clear:
Researchers have taken this botanical very seriously.
Ancient reputation.
Modern scrutiny.
A very different story from another trendy herb with three viral videos behind it.
